| Andy
Mayer grew up surfing on Long Island and began playing beats on his
mom's pillows to Meet the Beatles when he was 12. After about a year
his dad agreed that he was serious and helped him buy his first set
of Ludwig drums. He received formal instruction from Charles Boberg
for band, orchestra, and marching band percussion.
Andy
left New York during a January blizzard for a one month vacation with
friends and headed for the sunny surf of southern California in an old
police car. The one month vacation quickly turned into 8 years and during
that time Andy supported his surfing as a carpenter and as a drummer.
His drumming with The Edge took him to Las Vegas where he also played
with New Wave bands, The Ticks and The Kind, and the Rock band Penetrator.
Eventually the booming oil business brought him to Dallas in the early
80's.
Since
settling in Dallas, Andy has played and recorded with various Texas
bands including Darryl Rush and Fast Train, Zen Bubba Band, T-Roy Miller,
Briefcase Blues Band, Stephani Fine Band, and Scott Oldner. He has also
become a serious vintage drum collector and was been featured in an
article by Bill Zeeble on KERA 90.1 Public Radio. Andy's main musical
influences have been The Beatles, The Ventures, The Rolling Stones,
Grateful Dead, Lee Michaels, Marshall Tucker Band, Led Zeppelin, AC/DC,
Van Halen, and Tom Petty. |
